Hand-turned in the Forest of Arden

Every pen has a postcode.

Two of them, in fact. Where the material came from, and where the pen was named. Himalayan yew rescued from a firewood pile in Bhutan. A gondola’s forcola from a Venetian workshop. Sixty years of paint from a Detroit spray booth. I bring it home, and it becomes something you’ll actually use.

Named after the villages they were made between

Berkswell, Kenilworth, Warwick, Stratford, Lapworth, Hampton-in-Arden. Six postcodes, all within twenty miles of the lathe. Every pen is turned to order.

The Arden hallmark

Two postcodes, on every pen

Silversmiths have used assay marks for six hundred years to say where a thing was made and who stands behind it. Yours says something more useful — where the material has been, and where it ended up. It’s printed on the card that comes in the box.

Where it comes from

The material is the story

I don’t buy blanks off a shelf if I can help it. Most of what I turn was salvaged, rescued, gifted, or carried home in hand luggage. Not sure what to choose? Start with the material guides.

Detroit, Michigan

Fordite

Sixty years of overspray, baked hard in the paint ovens of American car plants and scrapped as waste. Slice into it and you get every car that came down that line.

British, est. 1905

Conway Stewart heritage resin

Original stock from one of Britain’s great pen houses, secured out of the liquidation. Not a tribute or an imitation — the real material, and there is only so much of it left.

Bethlehem, Holy Land

Jerusalem olive

Pruned from groves that have been worked for centuries, with a wild interlocking grain and a warm gold that darkens as you handle it. Nothing turns quite like it.

Orkney & Islay

Whisky cask stave

Oak from Highland Park, Ardbeg and others, retired after decades holding spirit. It still smells of the distillery when it hits the tool, which never stops being a thrill.

El Calafate, Patagonia

Guayubira & Marmelero

Bought from a small timber merchant at the end of the world, reclaimed from the same old floor. Named for the glaciers up the road — Spegazzini, Onelli, Argentino.

Misiones, Argentina

Palo Rosa

A Natural Monument species from the subtropical rainforest, gifted by a guide who carried it two thousand miles south. Pink-red heartwood that deepens with age.

Cannaregio, Venice

Gondola forcola walnut

Offcut walnut from a remèr’s workshop — the craftsmen who carve the oarlock every gondolier leans on. Six visits to Venice before I finally thought to ask.

Damaraland, Namibia

Camelthorn

Where the whole thing started, by accident. A carpenter, a grain I’d never seen, and a table that was never fitting in the suitcase. Pens did.

What customers say

A few notes from people who’ve bought one. Read more.

I and my husband use these pens daily they are a piece of craftsmanship and a real pleasure to use. We have also given some as presents to family and they have been very well received. It is a joy to have a pen made by a true craftsman.

Mike is an incredibly talented craftsman whose work truly speaks for itself. He made bespoke pens for both my daughter and me, and the quality of both is absolutely outstanding. The attention to detail is superb, and we will definitely be commissioning more of his work in the future!

Absolutely beautiful hand made fountain pen, both to look at and write with. Personal service too as Mike added a left-handed nib.... These pens are a work of art and I'm really enjoying mine. It was so well packed too and was delivered quickly. Recommended as a perfect gift (or in my case a treat, as I have struggled getting a good left-handed pen in the past).

Build the spec, and I’ll quote it

Pick the pen, the fittings, the plating and the material — including your own timber if you’ve got something with meaning to it. Takes about two minutes, and there’s no obligation at the end of it.

Sourced with care

Where I can, the material is salvaged, reclaimed or brought home from somewhere with a story. Where I buy blanks in, it’s from established pen-blank suppliers. Offcuts get used, not binned.
